One of my favorite saints is St. Benedict of Nursia, whose feast we celebrate on Saturday, July 11. He is regarded as the patron of Europe, Kidney Disease, Monastics, Poisoning, and Schoolchildren. His famous “Rule for Monasteries” is a much-loved guide for any spiritual seeker. I have read it many times and found it very helpful on my spiritual journey. I think you will too!
Two of my favorite quotes from the Rule are the following. “Prefer nothing to the love of Christ.” (chapter 4) and “All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ.” (chapter 53) The love of Christ is never really abstract; it always calls forth real change in our attitudes and behavior. Summertime offers its own opportunity to extend hospitality to those who visit our homes, our city, or join us for Mass in our NE Seattle Catholic Community. May our parish gatherings be known as a place of welcome and hospitality for all!
