One of the quotes attributed to the philosopher Aristotle is the following: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." This is a message I shared with those present at the graduation exercises at our parish schools this week. I encouraged our recent grads to make regular participation in the Eucharist a “Habit of the Heart” as they transition into high school.
As we gather this weekend to celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy Body andBlood of Christ (Corpus Christi), I want to share the same message to everyone in our NE Seattle Catholic Community. As summer draws near, and vacations and outdoor recreational activities become more frequent, let’s not forget to make participation at Mass a high priority in our schedules. As Vatican II reminds us, the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life.
Barbara Sauntry (1919-2023) pictured below knew that in her deeply Catholic heart. Although it was difficult and uncomfortable, Barbara, with the help of caregivers, was a regular participant in Sunday Mass until well past the age of 101. When it was no longer possible for her to attend in person, she watched the Mass on live stream, and one of our EM’s would bring her communion at home. She still remains a cherished part of the body of Christ. Pray for us, Barbara!
