Every week throughout the Easter season, the first reading at Mass is from the Acts of the Apostles. It tells the story of how the church was born of Jesus' resurrection. It’s a living word that reminds us of who we are called to be as the church in our own time. We hear in Acts 2:42-47, that the early Christians “Devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And all who believed were together and had all things in common.” In other words, in Christ, they became a community of life and love.
Community today looks very different from those early beginnings of our church, and yet the call remains to share our lives in real and helpful ways with each other. One of the ways we do that is by commemorating special remembrances like birthdays and anniversaries. This past Wednesday, the 29th, was the worldwide church celebration of the life of St. Catherine of Siena, the patron of one of our parishes. So happy feast day to our brothers and sisters at St. Catherine. We are so very blessed by your presence in our family of parishes.
Another aspect of community sharing is creativity. Our three schools all put on wonderful musicals this year. OLL performed “Beautyand the Beast,” and St. Catherine “Matilda.” Both were excellent! This weekend, ASB is presenting the much-loved musical “Frozen,” and is using the entire church space at St. Bridget, including the sanctuary, for the production. The parish community there is graciously giving up their Sunday morning Mass to accommodate the play’s schedule. A Christian community gladly makes these small sacrifices for the sake of its members. I thank the community at St. Bridget for their generosity, and for that of our other parish communities, who will welcome them to celebrate Mass in their worship spaces this weekend.
Blessings of continued Christian community to all!
