Our life on planet Earth is a gift from God that we cannot take for granted. Good planets are hard to find!
It’s been 10 years since Pope Francis published Laudato Si, his encyclical on “Care for Our Common Home.” In it, Pope Francis encouraged us to treat this gift of our earth with care and respect.
Pope Francis wrote, “Once we start to think about the kind of world we are leaving to future generations, we look at things differently; we realize that the world is a gift which we have freely received and must share with others. Since the world has been given to us, we can no longer view reality in a purely utilitarian way, in which efficiency and productivity are entirely geared to our individual benefit. Intergenerational solidarity is not optional, but rather a basic question of justice, since the world we have received also belongs to those who will follow us.”
This year, we are celebrating the Jubilee Year of Hope 2025, and September is our annual Season of Creation, a month-long prayerful observance that calls Catholics to pray and care for God’s Creation. Our Earth needs our care more than ever. What can you and I do to raise our awareness of the challenges to God’s creation and to foster care for the earth? Indeed, part of honoring our God is honoring God’s creation. Over the following weeks, look, read, learn, reflect – so that we can all grow in appreciation of our typical home.
